The Callejón de Hamel pays tribute to Afro-Cuban culture. The appeal lies in the colorful murals that adorn all of its walls along with motley sculptures, representing culture and religion. Gods and orishas, spiritual symbols and animals are reproduced, along with poems or legends about life, love, dignity, etc. Salvador González Escalona, painter and sculptor, is the one who initiated this project with the aim of revitalizing a street forgotten by time by creating an art gallery where the neighborhood itself was part of its creation. What began as a simple street demonstration of Afro-Cuban art and culture has today become a benchmark and a kind of sanctuary for all Cubans who feel that their roots are still alive. 💡Curiosities In this alley you will find music at all hours, products associated with Afro-Cuban work and rituals, festivals, concerts and shows, among other activities. 🗺 How to get there?
