Valle Yumurí

Located in the vicinity of Matanzas and Mayabeque provinces, Valle Yumurí is a captivating landscape for both locals and travelers. With a total area of 9,666 hectares, it holds among its jewels the Melocactus matanzanus, a cactus variety endemic to this region. Largely traversed by the famous Hershey train - the only operational electric railway in Cuba -, the routes it covers are safe and not busy, ideal conditions for a bike ride, given the terrain's topography. The Bacunayagua Lookout is the quintessential spot to observe the magnificence of Yumurí. The Bacunayagua Bridge (one of the Wonders of Cuban Engineering and the highest in the country) is a mandatory stop for anyone looking to discover the island and its charms. To the left the sea and to the right the valley, joined by the imposing viaduct, we have before our eyes an image worthy of being observed at least once in a lifetime. Monserrate, for its part, demonstrates the Hispanic legacy in the city of Matanzas. The Hermitage to Our Lady of Monserrat was built by descendants of Catalans settled in the area. Valle Yumurí is more than a valley, it is a must-visit site if one wishes to see the colors and landscape diversity of an island in its essence.
